Famous Odia devotional song singer Santilata Barik Chhotray has sadly passed away at a hospital in Bhubaneswar on Monday. Singer Subash Das said, “It is shocking news for all in Odisha. I was close to her.”

Santilata Barik Chhotray’s husband Basant Chhotray confirmed her passing. Her death has saddened many people in the state. Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik and Governor Raghubar Das expressed their sympathy for the loss of the singer. In a message, the Chief Minister described Santilata Barik Chhotray as a devoted singer known for her special performances of Jagannath bhajans.
He said her passing is a big loss for Odisha’s cultural community. He prayed for her soul. Santilata Barik was a well-known figure in Odia devotional music. She had been facing serious health issues, battling cancer since 2011. She received treatment at the Tata Memorial Cancer Hospital in Mumbai.
After initially recovering and being on medication, Santilata Barik’s health worsened again in 2022. She was readmitted to Tata Memorial Cancer Hospital for treatment. Following treatment, she returned home in September 2023. Despite being on medication, Santilata Barik suddenly fell ill on Monday.
Her family rushed her to a private hospital where she passed away in the evening. Her body was taken to her home in the Kedargouri area of Bhubaneswar. Her final rites will take place at Puri Swargadwar tomorrow, according to family sources.

Born in Nimapada region in 1958, Shantilata was a student of Utkal Sangeet Mahavidyalaya and learnt music from legendary gurus like Balakrushna Dash, Markandeya Mohapatra, Singhari Shyamsundar Kar, and Gopal Panda. She died on 1 April, 2024 due to cancer.

64 year old Santilata Barik Chhotray sang many famous Odia bhajans like ‘Bhaji Bhaji To Nama Chakanayan’, ‘Jagannath Tume Bada Chhalia,’ ‘Thaka Mana Chala Jiba,’ ‘Mun Je Deula Bedha,’ and ‘Kaaliare.’ Her beautiful voice made her well-known and respected in households all over the state, making her a legendary singer.
Music Director Premenanda expressed sadness about her death, saying he regrets not having the opportunity to work with her. He prayed for her soul.
Singer Subash Das expressed shock over her death, mentioning they were close. He visited her in the hospital during her cancer treatment. They sang together in many events, as she was a trained Odissi singer who enjoyed their performances. She particularly liked his songs.
