Around 20 people were arrested and detained at a nearby community hall with Hindu devotees questioning how an ancient temple, one built 25 years back could encroach. The Sri Narasimha Anjaneyar Swamy Temple had been built in the area located near Mudichur on 55 cents of land.
Collector M Arathi had said that encroachments on water bodies in Varadhrajapuram, Iyyapanthangal, Mangadu, Kolapakkam and Gerugambakkam had been identified by a joint committee comprising officials from the Public Works Department and the Revenue Department. “We are first removing commercial structures and places of worship. Time is being provided to those who have constructed houses. Some kind of rehabilitation is being planned for those who are poor,” Arathi said.
According to reports, the temple authority had sought time till 16 April, 2022, Hanuman Jayanti which was agreed upon but not agreed as the demolition took place regardless. Earlier in July of last year, the MK Stalin Tamil Nadu government had demolished a 125-year-old temple on the banks of Muthanankulam in the name of removing encroachments under the Smart City project.
