The lion and lioness, carrying these names, were relocated from Tripura’s Sepahijala Zoological Park to the Bengal Safari Park in Siliguri on February 12. The VHP’s attorney, Subhankar Dutta, stated that the court had expressed disapproval of the name dispute and that it would be taken before a normal High Court panel.

He joined IFS services in 1994 and was the chief wildlife warden of Tripura. Nevertheless, during his tenure, the identities of the lion pair, Akbar and Sita, were recorded in the dispatch registry prior to their transfer to Siliguri, which led to Prabin Lal Agrawal’s recent suspension from his position.

Following the uproar, the VHP filed a lawsuit with the Calcutta High Court, claiming that the names offended religious sensitivities, which resulted in the suspension. On February 12, a lion named Akbar and a lioness named Sita were moved from the Sepahijala Zoological Park in Tripura to the Bengal Safari Park in Siliguri.

In his explanation, Justice Bhattacharya stated that although Akbar “was a very successful and secular Mughal emperor,” Sita remains revered by a significant portion of the populace.
