Hemil Ashvinbhai Mangukiya, a 23-year-old from Gujarat, met his sad end on February 21 in the Donetsk area of Ukraine, close to the border with Russia. As revealed by recent reports, he was perished in an attack by the Ukrainian military.

A Surat native has been assisting the Russian army with security since December 2023. The incident unfolded when a group of Indians, including Hemil and his coworker Sameer Ahmad from Gulbarga, Karnataka, were on the battlefield during the Ukrainian airstrike.

The sudden strike claimed Hemil Ashvinbhai Mangukiya’s life, leaving Ahmad and others to seek refuge in the trenches.

Astonishingly, accounts suggest that Hemil was a prominent figure in the Russian ranks, connected to a Russian commander and exempt from lowly duties. The group targeted on February 21 comprised four Indians, with an additional loss of a Nepalese worker.

His family in Surat didn’t know that Hemil had died until two days later when they received word from an associate who had worked with him. The news initially seemed unbelievable, but upon verification, the family sadly confirmed its accuracy.

Hemil Ashvinbhai Mangukiya was an Indian native, who worked as a mercenary for the Russian Army. He has been in the news because he recently passed away in an attack by the Ukrainian military.

“We are helpless,” Hemil’s father Ashwin Mangukiya, who works in an embroidery unit, told The Indian Express.

He was a native of the Varachha neighborhood where he spent his formative years. Later, Hemil moved to Velanja village in Kamrej taluka of Surat a few years ago with his parents and younger brother, having barely completed Class 12. Meanwhile, his 21-year-old brother was pursuing studies in the UK.

Hemil Ashvinbhai Mangukiya had aspirations of traveling overseas to explore life outside boundaries, which is common among young people who are looking for fresh experiences. His  uncle Atul provided some insight into his travels, saying that on December 14, he left Chennai, India, to travel to Russia.

Despite his limited formal education, Hemil found an opportunity through social media, where he learned about the Russian army’s search for “helpers.” He arrived in Russia under the guidance of a recruiting agent, where he was offered a position with a large salary.

His uncle disclosed that Hemil Ashvinbhai Mangukiya had recently received his first salary, a noteworthy sum of Rs 2.3 lakh, which was deposited into his bank account just days before the tragic incident.

The family, grappling with the shock of Hemil’s untimely death, aims to seek clarity on the circumstances surrounding the airstrike. His family now intends to approach the government and ask them to coordinate with Russian officials for a comprehensive investigation to put together the specifics.

Meanwhile, local authorities have initiated an inquiry into Hemil’s journey to Russia and his employment there. At the time of his death, he was just 23 years old.
