Growing up in Nicholasville, Kentucky, Holtmann began his collegiate playing career at Brescia College in Owensboro, staying in the state. He moved to Taylor University after two seasons, where he played for his final two years.
Taylor was ranked first in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) rankings in 1994, his senior year, and he was named an All-America player. At Taylor University in 1997, Holtmann began his coaching career as a graduate assistant.
