The Elephants fan, identified as Anselme Santos, was seen watching his nation’s historic AFCON victory over the reigning champions from the stands. But since it seemed like he chose to chat with the young woman standing next to him instead of joining in on the wild celebrations at the stadium, he has turned into an online meme.

When he appeared in front of a live audience on the well-liked Ivorian show Sly de Sly Show on Wednesday Santos apologized. Actu Foot on X (formerly Twitter) claims that Mr Santos admitted to making a bad decision when attempting to court the woman. He apologized to his wife and kids for causing them any pain.

Mr. Santos continued, saying that the Senegalese woman refused to give him her number when he asked, saying he wasn’t persistent. “In the euphoria, I told her, ‘give your number’. It wasn’t mean, but she didn’t want to. So I didn’t insist. I would like to take this opportunity to apologise to the lady, my wife, and my children,” he was translated as saying.

Ivory Coast defeated Senegal to reach the quarterfinals

In their third group stage match, the Ivorians lost to Equatorial Guinea 4-0 at home, setting a record; in the second leg, Nigeria defeated them 1-0. Following the loss, they fired head coach Jean-Louis Gasset and appointed assistant Emerse Fae in his stead. The host country was in a dangerous position in the competition, on the verge of being eliminated in the group stage. They made a bold decision to fire their manager, Jean-Louis Gasset, before the teams for the knockout stage were finalized.

Later, Ivory Coast advanced to the AFCON quarterfinals against Mali, defeating holders Senegal 5-4 on penalties following a 1-1 draw at the Charles Konan Banny Stadium, despite terrible group play. After a poor showing in Group A, which also featured Equatorial Guinea and Nigeria, the host country advanced to the knockout stages as one of the top third-place teams.
