A native of London, Piper made a significant move to Gillingham in 1996 for a transfer fee of £40,000, accumulating 24 appearances for the club.
Following a career-altering leg break, he transitioned to non-league football with St Albans, where he became a beloved figure, making 98 appearances and scoring 28 goals over a two-year span.
Subsequently, Piper joined the Conference side Farnborough before spells at Dagenham & Redbridge and Margate. He concluded his career with Whyteleafe in Surrey.

Gillingham announced Piper’s passing on social media, expressing deep sadness and offering condolences to his friends and family. The club stated, “Everyone at the club is saddened to learn that former player Lenny Piper has sadly passed away. Our thoughts and condolences are with Lenny’s friends, family, and loved ones at this very difficult time. RIP.”
The Gillingham Supporters Club also shared their sorrow, stating, “Very sad news about Lenny Piper. Our thoughts are with his family and friends at this sad time. Born in London, he began his career with Wimbledon but in 1996 moved to Gillingham for a transfer fee of £40,000. He made 24 appearances for the Gills. RIP Lenny.”
Margate, another of Piper’s former clubs, added their sympathies: “We are saddened to learn that former player Lenny Piper has passed this morning, just aged 46. Piper came in on loan in the 2003/04 season from Dagenham and Redbridge. We send our thoughts to the friends and family of Lenny.”
Leonard Henry Piper, born on August 8, 1977, was an English midfielder whose career left an indelible mark. Fans paid tribute, reminiscing about his contributions, with one stating, “46, far too young. RIP,” and another expressing, “That’s really sad. RIP Lenny.” A third fan recalled, “That winner against Bristol City. Absolute rocket. RIP Lenny.”
