Voters found great resonance in the election, which was focused on economic issues and questioned Bhutan’s custom of placing a higher value on “Gross National Happiness” than just rapid economic progress.
They were largely concerned about the challenges facing Bhutan’s youth, particularly the country’s high rate of youth unemployment and the exodus of highly trained workers. Contesting parties maintained the country’s constitutional commitment to a government style that prioritizes the “happiness and well-being of the people.”
According to The Bhutanese newspaper, the PDP’s overwhelming victory in securing over two-thirds of the parliamentary seats puts Tshering Tobgay, a 58-year-old conservationist, in a position to become the country’s next prime minister.
The report says that preliminary results from constituencies show that the PDP won 30 seats, with the Bhutan Tendrel Party (BTP) winning the remaining 17 seats.

Who is Tshering Tobgay?
Tshering Tobgay is a respected Bhutanese politician. He has been in the news because he is all set to be the prime minister of Bhutan again.
He was born on 19 September 1965 in Haa, Bhutan. Tobgay’s mother helped build the first road that connected Bhutan and India, and his father was among the first troops in the Royal Bhutan Army. He also has six brothers.
Tshering Tobgay did his schooling at Dr. Graham’s Homes School in Kalimpong, India. With a United Nations scholarship in hand, Tobgay graduated with a Bachelor of Science in mechanical engineering from the Swanson School of Engineering at the University of Pittsburgh in 1990. In 2004, he also earned a master’s degree in public administration from Harvard University’s John F. Kennedy School of Government.
He is married, and his wife’s name is Tashi Doma. The couple has two children.
He is currently 58 years old.

Tshering Tobgay, a former civil servant turned politician, embodies the essence of Bhutanese politics. In addition to being a prominent political figure, he is an ardent supporter of Bhutanese culture and an outspoken environmentalist.
From July 2013 until August 2018, Tobgay led Bhutan as prime minister, exhibiting excellent leadership and dedication to the country’s development. As of January 9, 2024, Tobgay has reclaimed the position of Prime Minister through democratic elections, maintaining his role as the leader of the People’s Democratic Party.
Before taking office as prime minister, Tobgay demonstrated his skills in parliament by holding the role of Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly from March 2008 to April 2013.
