A look at Mitsuyo Yoshida’s career
The career of boxer Miyo Yoshida is an intriguing tale of a fighter who rose through the ranks, faced challenges head-on, won, and made a lasting impression on the professional boxing world.
On May 28, 2014, Yoshida made her professional debut at the Korakuen Hall in Tokyo, Japan, defeating Ayaka Sato by a majority decision (MD) after four rounds. She had won her previous four fights before facing Yuki Koseki on March 13, 2016, and lost by unanimous decision (UD) over four rounds.
Yoshida recovered with three wins before stopping Tomomi Takano via unanimous decision over six rounds to win the first-ever Japanese female bantamweight title. The battle was scored 58–57 by all three judges.
To win the OPBF female bantamweight title, she defeated Gretel de Paz on August 20, 2018, at the Korakuen Hall. Due to Yoshida’s unintentional headlock in the fifth round, the fight was halted, and the outcome of the five rounds of competition was left up to the scorecards. Meanwhile, a Technical decision (TD) with two judges went in favour of her.
She has become one of the sport’s most illustrious figures. Yoshida had solidified his position as a prominent figure in the boxing industry by 2021. In addition to being a champion within the ring, she was an inspiration outside of it as the WBO junior-bantamweight champion.
All three judges had Yoshida, who was a 7/1 underdog, well clear on the cards (99-91 x2, 97-93), seeing the 35-year-old take her record to 17-4 and handing Bridges her second career loss in 11 fights.
Mitsuyo Yoshida is a single mother
As a single mother going to San Francisco for an impromptu title bout, Yoshida’s story is nothing short of inspirational. She has a daughter who was present at the recent fight to win the IBF women’s bantamweight title.
