Red Bull supremo Christian Horner threw his weight behind FIA race director Michael Masi after the fiasco of the F1 Abu Dhabi 2021
Where Mercedes and Toto Wolff were tearing their hair proceeding Michael Masi’s decision to allow five lapped cars to overtake after the safety car was deployed in the wake of Nicholas Latifi’s crash, Red Bull and Christian Horner were rejoicing.
The decision allowed Verstappen to overtake Hamilton with his new fresh soft tyres seeing him get past the finishing line and with it bring home his first ever glistening title. He also went onto become the first Dutchman to win the drivers’ championship title, a win which Mercedes decided to protest against soon afterwards.

While the protest was thrown out by the FIA stewards, Mercedes went onto launch an intention to appeal. The team had 96 hours to decide its further course of action.
However, where Mercedes were exploring their legal options and deciding on whether they wanted to approach the FIA International Court of Appeal, Red Bull’s team principal Christian Horner was ready for anything which Mercedes threw his way. He also talked about Masi’s decision being the correct one.
“Masi made the right decision. He followed the rules procedure if you look at the rules available to him and he’s made the right call today,” Horner said when quizzed about the controversy which had erupted after Latifi’s crash.
It looks like Horner won’t be required to go to court after all with reports coming in of Mercedes having decided against appealing with Toto Wolff said to have resigned himself with the fact that Hamilton lost out to Verstappen.
