Just recently, UK PM Rishi Sunak decided to sack Home Secretary Suella Braverman following a series of controversial comments about various issues. Suella recently accused the police of their โ€œdouble standardsโ€ and claimed that forces โ€œplay favouritesโ€ with pro-Palestinian protests. She also stated that nationalists and football fans face tougher policing than โ€œpolitically connected minority groups.โ€ She made the recent comments just days after previously stating that being homeless was a lifestyle choice.

Suella Braverman bio and age

Sue-Ellen Cassiana Braverman is a British politician and barrister who was born on April 3, 1980, in Harrow, London. She was born to Indian immigrant parents who both emigrated from different countries, and she is currently 43 years old. Suellaโ€™s father, Christie Fernandes, was from Kenya, while her mother, Uma Fernandes, moved to the UK from Mauritius. Growing up, the family faced some harrowing times when Suella’s father lost his job as an insurance broker. She shared in an interview:

He was unemployed for several years and his sense of identity was shattered. It really broke him as a man. Mum became the backbone of the family, financially and emotionally, and that was a big epiphany for me.” She added: “It struck me when I was 11 that she was killing herself to pay for my education and that felt a massive responsibility on my shoulders.”

Suella’s real name is Sue-Ellen Cassiana Braverman, and she was named after the fictional character Sue Ellen Ewing from the American soap opera โ€œDallasโ€. She once talked about her name, saying:

So my name is actually Sue-Ellen, because my mum was a fan of Dallas and thought this would be a great name for her daughter. I’ve been plagued ever since. But my primary school teachers didn’t like the hyphen. So they came up with Suella on my little tag for my coat and that stuck.โ€

During her childhood, Suella attended a private secondary school, which was partly funded by a scholarship. She then attended Cambridge where she studied law and later qualified as a Barrister in 2005.

Suella Braverman political career

The 43-year-old developed an interest in politics through her mom, who was always politically active ever since she emigrated in the 1960s. Her mother studied social care at university to become a nurse, but eventually ended up serving on the Brent local council. She worked there as a councillor for 16 years before making attempts to stand as an MP twice, once in 2001 and once in 2003.

Suella became a MP for Fareham back in 2015 and has been a member of the British Parliament ever since. She has so far served as the Home Secretary twice, firstly from September 6, 2022, to October 19, 2022, and then again from October 25, 2022, until November 13, 2023.

Marriage and children

Suella Braverman is currently married to Rael Braverman, who is a manager at Mercedes. Rale is described as a โ€œvery proud member of the Jewish community.โ€ The couple got married back in February 2018 at the House of Commons after previously dating for three years. The couple currently shares two children together. Their first child, a son, was born in 2019, while their daughter was born in 2021.
