After his horse, Balzando had an incident during a race on Sunday at Manning Valley Race Club in Australia, Lachlan Scorse, 19, had to be taken to the hospital. After just four months of riding, Scorse was thrown off his horse and crashed onto the grass. Four jockeys were hurt in the four-horse fall that occurred on Sunday when Mr Scorse’s horse toppled during Race 6. At 4:15 p.m., paramedics were called to the club, according to a NSW Ambulance spokesperson.

Mr Scorse, 19, was transported by air to Newcastle’s John Hunter Hospital in a serious state, with intermittent unconsciousness. After being taken to John Hunter Hospital, Scorse was put on a ventilator and put into an induced coma. Jeff Penza and Courtney Van Der Werf, two other riders, were hospitalized after sustaining severe injuries.

Van Der Werf crushed her collarbone, and Penza suffered additional lung damage in addition to a concussion and ten broken ribs. Jeff Kehoe, a fellow rider, sustained soft tissue injuries to his right shoulder and left leg.

Scorse has been kept on the ventilator for at least 24 hours

Scorse appeared a little better despite rumours that he had since awakened from a coma. He is still in critical care in a bad condition but is currently alive. In a statement made public on Monday, Racing NSW provided an update on Scorse, stating that the Jockey is still under close observation for the next 24 hours.

Following Balzando’s stumble, several runners gathered behind him, creating a “domino effect.” Sadly, Balzando’s injuries required him to be put down, but the other three horses in the collision all made it out alive.

Tony Crisafi, CEO of the NSW Jockeys Association, stated about the fall that it occurs too often, but it feels devastating when terrible falls happen. He further termed the fall the worst fall this year.

Lachlan Scorse is the grandson of the late Alan Scorse and the son of former jockey Matthew Scorse. Earlier this month, racer Maria Alejandra Bruzual, 43, tragically died in a horrifying mid-race fall, sending the racing community into mourning.
