The previous week, Speaker Rota had introduced 98-year-old Yaroslav Hunka as a war hero from the First Ukrainian Division during World War II. However, what many didn’t know was that Hunka actually served in a Nazi regiment that fought the Allies. This revelation led to a global outcry, with critics condemning Canada for its ignorance.
The Prime Minister’s office made it clear that, until after the presidential address, it was not aware of Hunka’s offer. The Speaker’s office further affirmed that it had not given its guest list to any other party or organization. According to the Speaker’s office, the screening procedure for visitors to the gallery was underlined to be focused on physical security dangers rather than reputational concerns.

His full name is Anthony Michael Gerard Rota. He was born on 15 May 1961 in North Bay, Ontario, Canada. Upon his graduation from high school, he earned a Bachelor of Arts in political science from Wilfrid Laurier University. Subsequently, he obtained a Master of Business Administration degree from the University of Ottawa and a certification in finance from Algonquin College.
Anthony Rota is married, and his wife’s name is Chantal Piché-Rota. The couple has one daughter named Samantha.
He speaks English, French, Italian, and Spanish with ease. Rota is currently 62 years old.
His career
Before becoming a politician, Anthony Rota was the regional manager for Ontario at the Industrial Research Assistance Program. He has also worked in the private sector and served with the Canadian Technology Network in Ottawa.
Rota started off in politics as a municipal councilor before winning the Liberal Party candidacy for Nipissing—Timiskaming in 2004. In later elections, he had both successes and failures, and in December 2019, he was elected Speaker of the House of Commons. However, in 2023, he resigned from his post.
In addition to a base salary of $194,600 as a member of the House of Commons, the Speaker receives an additional salary of $92,800 and a car allowance of $1,000 a year with Rota having a net worth between $1-5 million.
