Despite playing with ten players for the majority of second-half, Mohun Bagan SG retained their 1-0 lead till the end to capture the 2023 Durand Cup. With this win, Mohun Bagan have clinched their seventeenth Durand Cup, which is one more than rivals East Bengal FC.

In the 2023 Durand Cup championship match, East Bengal FC outplayed their rivals in the first-half and started the second-half on high-note. Mohun Bagan’s winning chances suffered another setback, when Anirudh Thapa had to leave the field after receiving two yellow cards in the game. Despite the momentum in their favor, East Bengal weren’t able to convert their chances and this kept the score 0-0.

After an East Bengal corner in the 70th minute, Mohun Bagan star Dimitri Petratos started a fantastic counterattack, and eventually no one was able to to take the ball from him. Petratos then took a wonderful left-footed drive from outside the box that East Bengal custodian Prabhsukhan Gill had no chance to stop. Following this goal, the Mohun Bagan Super Giant players put on an outstanding defensive performance while East Bengal failed to play well moving forward, which allowed Mohun Bagan to keep the lead despite having only 10 men on the pitch.

Durand Cup 2023: list of awards, winners, & prize money

Vishal Kaith of the Mohun Bagan Super Giants, who had two clean sheets in the competition and made some outstanding saves, received the Golden Glove award. Meanwhile, 21-year-old Mohammedan SC striker David Lalhlansanga was named the tournament’s Golden Boot winner with six goals. Nandha Kumar Sekar of East Bengal FC received the Golden Ball honor even though he was unable to win the Trophy for the team.

According to confirmed reports, the total prize pool for the 2023 Durand Cup is INR 89 Lakhs. From this pool, Mohun Bagan SG will receive INR 50 Lakhs after clinching the title and East Bengal FC will earn INR 30 Lakhs after finishing as the runner-up team. Elsewhere, all individual award winners bagged cash prizes worth INR 3 Lakhs.
