Neeraj Chopra is an Indian Olympic winner and World Champion in Javelin throw, who was born on 24 December, 1997. He was born to a family engaged in agriculture in Khandra Village of Panipat, Haryana and he has two sisters. Neeraj graduated from the Dayanand Anglo Vedic College, located in Chandigarh and he is currently pursuing a Bachelor of Arts degree from Lovely Professional University, Jalandhar, Punjab.

As a child, Neeraj was always got teased for obesity due to which his father enrolled him in a gym. Eventually, former professional javelin thrower Jaiveer Choudhary recognised Chopra’s talents when he made visits to the Panipat Sports Authority. Jaiveer served as Neeraj’s first coach before he enrolled in Tau Devi Lal Sports Complex in Panchkula. There, trained under Naseem Ahmad and learnt the long run and javelin throw.

Although he averaged 55 metres during training, he made a record 68.40 metres while competing at Lucknow’s 2012 junior championship. At the senior nationals, he achieved an impressive 70 metres, while he threw a record 81.04 metres at the junior category. Following his achievements, he got to join NIS Patiala, where he underwent further training.

Neeraj eventually won his first medal, a silver, at the Youth Olympics Qualification in Bangkok in 2014. He then won his first gold at the South Asian Games, with a record 87.3 metres. Neeraj couldn’t compete in the 2016 Rio Olympics due to a cut-off date clash but won a gold medal in the 2016 IAAF World U20 Championships. While doing so, he set a world junior record of 86.48 metres.

Neeraj Chopra cemented his place as a true star in the sport after winning gold at the Tokyo 2023 Olymps. He then secured a silver medal at the World Athletics Championships on 24th July 2022. He became just the second Indian to win a medal at the competition after Anju Bobby George in 2003. And now he has won a gold at the World Athletics Championship 2023 with a throw of 88.17 metres securing his spot as the world number one.
