In September 2020, Pape Matar Sarr transferred from Senegal’s Generation Foot Academy to Metz. He made his Ligue 1 debut in November against Brest and went on to make 25 appearances in 2020–21, including 22 in Ligue 1 and three in the Coupe de France. Notably, Pape scored four goals during this period. After joining Tottenham Hotspur, he returned on loan to the Ligue 1 team for the remainder of the 2021/22 season, and played in twenty-seven matches.
In 2022, Pape played a crucial role for Senegal and guided them to win the Africa Cup of Nations. Later that year, Pape was selected to represent Senegal in the 2022 Qatar FIFA World Cup.
