This morning, when the tragedy occurred, he had won the pole position for the rookie race. After entering turn one, Shreyas lost control and collapsed, breaking his skull severely. He was taken to a local hospital in a trauma care ambulance that was waiting at the track after the race was promptly red flagged.

When he arrived at the hospital, he was already declared dead. At his bedside was Copparam Hareesh, his father. After K.E. Kumar, age 59, died in a Saloon Car racing accident in January, this is the second fatality at the Madras International Circuit this year.

In the Rookie category of the Petronas TVS One-Make Championship this season, Shreyas, a student at Bengaluru’s Kensri School who was born on July 26, 2010, had won multiple races at the national level, including four in a row. MMSC president Ajit Thomas said:

“It is tragic to have lost a rider so young and talented. Shreyas, who was making waves with his prodigious racing talent, was provided medical assistance on the spot immediately after the incident and taken to the hospital.

“Under the circumstances, we have decided to cancel this weekend’s programme. The MMSC offers heartfelt condolences, and our thoughts are with his family.”

Shreyas competed in the MiniGP races in Spain after winning the FIM MiniGP India championship, placing fifth and fourth in two races in May of this year. He was slated to represent team CRA Motorsports in the 250cc division (Group B) of the 2023 MSBK Championship at Sepang Circuit in Malaysia in August.
