Which players will participate from India in the upcoming 2023 Davis Cup tie?
Notably, the Indian squad will have six players including doubles duo Rohan Bopanna & Sumit Nagal, who is currently ranked No. 179 in the ATP men’s singles tennis rankings. Unsurprisingly, the No. 9 doubles player in the world, Rohan Bopanna, has had a fantastic year, winning the Indian Wells Masters and the Qatar Open. The seasoned Indian tennis player revealed last month that the match against Morocco will mark his final Davis Cup performance.
The All India Tennis Association (AITA) on Monday announced the six-member Indian team for the Davis Cup World Group II tie against Morocco scheduled from September 16 to 17 in Lucknow.
For India’s match against Morocco, the four Indian tennis players will be Sasikumar Mukund (Rank: 345), Digvijay Pratap Singh (Rank: 535), Yuki Bhambri (Rank: 944), and Ramkumar Ramanathan (Rank: 573). Zeeshan Ali will serve as the team’s coach, and ex-player Rohit Rajpal will continue to serve as the team’s non-playing captain.
How will this match’s result impact India’s future in the Davis Cup?
Since the new Davis Cup system was introduced in 2019, the Indian tennis team has dropped down to the Group II stage for the first time, as they lost 2-3 against Denmark in the the Davis Cup 2023 World Group I play-offs. From the lineup that was announced for the match against Denmark, there has just been one change to the Indian Davis Cup team and Prajnesh Gunneswaran is replaced by Digvijay Pratap Singh. Additionally, AITA has nominated five other players who will be with the squad to give the core group some beneficial practice matches: Saketh Myneni, Manas Dhamne, Manish Sureshkumar, Karan Singh, & Yuvan Nandal.
In World Group II matches, 24 national teams will compete and while the losers will be relegated to World Group II Play-offs, the 12 winners will qualify for the World Group I Play-offs. According to format, each Davis cup tie will consist of five matches and the first team to win three matches will emerge victorious.
