Mananthavady in Kerala’s Wayanad district suddenly came alive as the India and Bangladesh women’s cricket teams were getting ready for the first T20I at Mirpur.

Around the verandah, family members and neighbours assembled. Municipal council members, local MLA O R Kelu, and news outlets were also there. The hilly village was about to experience the moment it had been yearning for. The pride of Wayanad, Minnu Mani, was ready to make history by joining the India senior cricket squad as the first female cricketer from Kerala.

Mani, Minnu’s father and a daily-wage labourer said, as per The Indian Express:

Minnu had earlier told us that she was unlikely to get a chance in the first game. However, around 10.30 in the morning, she called us and said she would be in the playing eleven and asked us to pray for her. I immediately alerted all the neighbours and well-wishers, and they came here to watch the match along with us.”

Despite being an international match, there was no telecast, so everyone saw Minnu perform on the biggest stage of her career thus far through their smartphones via the Bangladesh Cricket Board’s YouTube account.

On the pitch, Minnu, 24, received her cap from her favourite player, Smriti Mandhana. Minnu was one of two debutantes from India, the other being Bareddy Anusha. After India decided to field, the off-spinning all-rounder joined the match to bowl with her cap on during the powerplay.

The day was made sweeter for Minnu and everyone presents at her Mananthavady home by a wicket in the first over as a pleased Mani and his wife Vasantha opened the sweets box.

Who is Minnu Mani?

Minnu Mani, a cricket player, was born on March 24, 1999, in India. The 24-year-old represents Delhi Capitals in the Women’s Premier League. In domestic cricket, the 5′ 6″ player represents Kerala Cricket Team. She becomes the first woman from Kerela to play for the Indian women’s cricket team.

Who are Minnu Mani’s parents?

Minnu Mani was born in Choyimoola in Wayanad, Kerala, to CK Mani, her father who is a daily wage labourer and Vasantha, who is a housewife. She also has a is sister named Mimitha who is younger than her.

At age 10, she began playing cricket in paddy fields with boys. Her family wasn’t initially in favour of her playing cricket, however, Elsamma, her physical education teacher, recognised her talent and brought her to the Wayanad District Under-13 team’s trials.

The next year, she joined the Kerala U-16 team, and at age 16, she began playing for Kerala at the senior level. Minnu had to switch four buses during her daily one and a half-hour trip to the nearest stadium from her home for cricket training.

Minnu Mani’s education

She completed her eighth grade education at Mananthavady Government Vocational Higher Secondary School in Edappady and her tenth grade education at St. Sebastian High School in Thodupuzha.

After completing her higher secondary education at Sarvajana Higher Secondary School in Sulthan Bathery, she received her degree from Thiruvananthapuram’s Government College for Women. She is currently pursuing her distance learning BA in Sociology as of 2023.

Minnu Mani’s career so far

Minnu made her debut for Kerala at the age of 16. She was the star player when Kerala’s U-23 women’s team won the national T20 championship in 2018 with 188 runs and 11 wickets.

For India Blue, she participated in the Under-23 One Day Challenger Trophy in 2019. The India A team was touring Bangladesh when she was called for the ACC Emerging Women’s Asia Cup in the same year she received her maiden call.

Prior to the 2023 Women’s Premier League, she was acquired by the Delhi Capitals during the WPL auction in February 2023.
