A young Formula 1 driver who collided with another car managed to survive the horrific incident that sent her flying while suffering just minor injuries. After an effort to pass rival driver Bianca Bustamente at the Monza racing track in Italy failed, F1 academy talent Chloe Grant asserted that she would not have been able to escape from her car alive if it weren’t for the Halo device attached to her vehicle.

Grant competed in the inaugural race of the F1 Academy series, which has replaced the W Series and is designed to support young female drivers and offer them a chance to compete in F1 and other professional motorsport categories. And after attempting a movement on the track, the 17-year-old Scottish driver was eager to make a good impression as she set up a move on Bustamente. But as the two cars collided, Grant was launched into the air, giving their teammates a heart-stopping moment.

Grant has expressed gratitude for the Halo-inspired system.

“Good day, everyone. After my race one incident, I just wanted to let you know that I’m fine,” Grant posted on Instagram. She appreciated everyone for their kind wishes. She further stated that she was quite appreciative of the Halo-inspired system. The fire was inside the car as well; however, she was able to exit thanks to the Halo system without any problems.

Bustamente expressed her thanks to the safety mechanism for sparing her life and acknowledged how fortunate she was to escape unharmed: “Walked away from this one. Halo kept me secure,” she said in a post.

What is the Halo system?

The halo system is one of the most ground-breaking safety innovations, which was introduced to F1 in 2018. It happened after Jules Bianchi passed away nine years prior from injuries sustained in a collision at the Japanese Grand Prix.

Since then, the technology has prevented a number of other drivers from suffering significant injuries. Charles Leclerc, Fernando Alonso, Lewis Hamilton, and Guanyu Zhou have all been involved in accidents where the Halo was essential to keeping them safe. And following a terrible collision between Grant and Bustamente, it has once again demonstrated how important it is.
