Why 2022-23 English Premier League will reward higher sum to all participating teams?
After the season is over, the Premier League will officially announce how much central payments were made to each participating club. From the commercial revenue stream, each club receives the same amount, which amounted to £6.8 million per team last season. Additionally, clubs receive a predetermined sum from the Premier League’s domestic and international broadcast deals. However, it is important to note that a sizeable portion of both of these revenue streams is distributed according to the finishing position of teams; this is referred to as the merit payments.
This massive increase in merit rewards is due to an expansion of the Premier League’s global television agreement. The domestic pact was worth £5 billion from 2019 to 2022, compared to the international deal’s £4 billion. However, the international deal has climbed to £5.05 billion for the years 2022 to 2025, surpassing the domestic sum for the first time.
How much merit payment will be earned by clubs playing in the 2022-23 English Premier League?
Norwich City, who finished at the bottom position last season, received slightly over £2 Million in merit awards. Southampton, though, will receive about £3.7 Million for finishing last this season. Manchester City has won the title both this year and previous, but their total merit payments have gone up by £33 million. Meanwhile, Arsenal will likely receive £70.8 Million for finishing the season as runner-up.
Ahead of the final day of the 2022-23 English Premier League, only six teams have confirmed their finishing position. However, the final day will bear significant importance for former champions Leicester City, who might be relegated.
