Fans mocked Vinicius Jr. with ‘M*no M*no’ chants.
During yesterday’s encounter between Real Madrid and Valencia, the Brazilian winger Vinicius Jr. was the target of racist insults from the Valencia supporters. At the Mestalla Stadium during the 35th round of the Spanish Championship, racist acts against Vin Jr. once more took place in Spanish stadium stands.
In Real Madrid games, racist taunts are frequently directed at Vini. He brought referee Ricardo de Burgos Bengoetxea up close to the crowd during the racial chanting during today’s game to identify some of the offenders. But the match continued.
Racism peaked when Valencia takes the lead.
The first goal of the game was applauded by the Valencia supporters. The cheering fans began to sing “Mono, mono, mono” during these celebrations. Mono is the Spanish word that literally translates to “monkey.”
Near the bench, Vinicius was spotted being called by Carlo Ancelotti for a conversation. The match was then in danger of being halted, so the Mestalla announcer had to call for an end to the racial epithets on the stadium’s microphones. But the game continued after a little while.
The general tone of the game was pretty dark.
Yunus Musah wrestled with Antonio Rudiger after trapping the ball in the final minutes to prevent a corner from Real Madrid. Vinicius groused. Vini Jr. elbowed Hugo Duro as Valencia custodian Giorgi Mamardashvili went for him in the pandemonium. Vini Jr. was dismissed by the referee after a VAR review. He and his teammates were spotted cynically clapping their hands as they departed the pitch.
Although this isn’t the first time Vini Jr. has encountered racial epithets. The Brazilian winger was subjected to these remarks repeatedly throughout the entire season. His team and teammates have expressed how upsetting and hurtful these actions have been in numerous statements. But the League hasn’t yet made any significant moves. It will be interesting to see if La Liga does anything to protect players from racial abuse like this this time, or if they choose to turn a blind eye till it happens again.
