Paulo Fonseca might just be the Newcastle United new pick for the head coach position as Steve Bruce gets sacked, know his tactics, net worth and salary
As Steve Bruce departs from Newcastle United after more than two years with the Magpies, it seems like the club has already gotten into advanced talks with some of their top picks for the role. Former Roma boss Paulo Fonseca is the first choice to replace Steve Bruce as the new head coach.
Bruce left the club on Wednesday and Assistant coach Graeme Jones will be leading Newcastle for their game against Crystal Palace on Saturday.
Who is Paulo Fonseca: Net Worth, Tactics And Will He Be The New Manager Of Newcastle United
A former central defender, Fonseca played in Portugal’s top flight with clubs like Porto, Maritimo and Vitoria Guimaraes before hanging up his boots in 2005. However, his managerial career has been much better than his playing career.
He started out by coaching his final professional club, Estrela Amadora’s youth team. After that he managed some lower Portuguese clubs before leading Pacos Ferreira to Champions League qualification in 2012.
Even though he won the cup with Braga after being sacked by Porto after just one season, Fonseca did not gain much success in Portugal. That changed when he coached Shakhtar Donetsk and AS Roma, where he did well to make a mark. While at Donetsk, Fonseca won three league titles and three cups in just three seasons.
After that he moved to Italy and helped AS Roma climb up to being 5th in the Serie A during the 2019/20 season. It was also under Fonseca’s management that Roma reached the semi-finals of the Europa League last season.
The reason for his exit from AS Roma this year was mainly because of a substitutions-mix up in a cup clash against Spezia in the Coppa Italia which ultimately resulted in a defeat. Apparently there were a total of six changes that Fonseca had made in the game, but in his defence, he was not at all aware of what happened.
Tottenham move rumours
After he left Roma, Fonseca was heavily linked with a move to Tottenham Hotspur as the North London club’s new head coach. The club’s new sporting director Fabio Paratici was almost convinced about appointing Fonseca as the new head coach of Tottenham, only to back out of the deal because of the Portuguese coach’s attacking style.
However, reports from eminent journalist Fabrizio Romano revealed that the deal was actually shelved because of ‘tax issues.’ However, the manager could end up shifting to Newcastle United in the impending time with the side’s new Saudi Arabia owners willing to give him a salary of 6 million pounds per year.
Fonseca net worth: $1.5 million
Salary: Fonseca was earning $2.5 million per year at AS Roma.
