Corey chose his ring name the night prior to his first wrestling match, and he also picked the name “Sterling James Keenan” as a tribute to Sterling Sharpe, who is one of his favorite American footballers as a child, and Maynard James Keenan of band Too.
In the next few years, he appeared in different promotions, including Dory Funk Jr.’s “Funking Conservatory”, where Corey finished with other wrestlers such as Paul London, Adam Windsor, and Onyx.
