The further picture
Due to hand injuries sustained in his accident with Miguel Oliveira in Portimao, Marc Marquez missed his third consecutive race. Iker Lecuona of the Honda WorldSBK team, who competed in MotoGP for Tech3 KTM in the 2020 and 2021 seasons with a best finish of sixth, took the eight-time world champion’s position in Jerez. The 23-year-old Lecuona finished third in the WorldSBK last year and is presently tenth in the early 2023 standings.
Dani Pedrosa, a 31-time MotoGP champion, was also returning to the elite-class grid as a KTM wild card. Pedrosa has not competed in a grand prix since the Austria 2021 race, and he had not raced in Jerez since his final full-time campaign with Repsol Honda in 2018.
The various injuries Pol Espargaro sustained in Portugal are still bothering him, therefore Pedrosa’s KTM test rider Jonas Folger took his position at Tech3.
