Indian boxer Kaur Singh, who won a gold medal at the Asian Games and even squared off against Muhammad Ali in an exhibition match, passed away on Thursday at a hospital in Kurukshetra, Haryana.

He was 74 years old and receiving care for several medical issues when he died. The chief minister of Punjab’s office also released an official statement, expressing his grief over his death. The statement said,

Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann on Thursday expressed profound grief and sorrow over the sad demise of former Olympian and veteran boxer Kaur Singh who breathed his last in a private hospital at Kurukshetra this morning. He is survived by two sons and a daughter.

Who was Kaur Singh?

Kaur Singh was a well-known Indian heavyweight champion boxer. He has been in the news because he passed away at the age of 74.

He was born in 1948 or 1949 in Khanal Khurd, Sangrur, East Punjab, India. His family is of Jat Sikh descent. He was married and the father of two sons and one daughter.

He died on April 27, 2023, in Kurukshetra, Haryana, India. At the time of his death, he was 74 years old. Kaur Singh has a height of 6 feet 4 inches and weighs 61 kg.

His career

Before being a boxer, Kaur Singh was an Indian Army officer. During his time in the army, he served as a havildar and fought in the India-Pakistan war, where his courageous acts earned him the prestigious Sena Medal. His contributions were further recognized in 1988 when he was awarded the Vishisht Sewa Medal.

As a boxer, he won the senior national boxing championship in 1979 and held the gold medal for four more years, until 1983. At the Asian Boxing Championship in Mumbai in 1980, he took home a gold medal.

At the Asian Games in New Delhi in the heavyweight division in 1982, Singh took home a gold medal. In the Los Angeles Olympics, where he competed and represented India, he won two fights but lost the third one, pushing him to end his boxing career in 1984.
