Chris Smith, a former defensive end for the Cleveland Browns, has died, and his high school alma mater shared a formal announcement on Twitter.
The statement read, “A West Rowan Legend, Rest in Peace! Chris was a greater person than a player, in my opinion. His influence on those around him will endure forever.”
Who Is Chris Smith?
Chris Smith was a former player for the Bengals in the 2017 NFL season and was a graduate of the University of Arkansas. The Jacksonville Jaguars selected him in the fifth round of the 2014 NFL Draught (159th overall).
Before making a trade to join the Bengals, the North Carolina native played in Jacksonville for three seasons. Jaguars received a conditional choice in the 2018 draught as compensation.
With four tackles, one quarterback hit, and one sack in six games, Smith ended his final season in Jacksonville. He was signed to Cincinnati in order to improve a defence that had the 19th-most sacks the season before.
The Bengals’ lone season proved to be his greatest. He concluded the season with career highs with 26 tackles, nine quarterback hits, and three sacks in 16 games.

Chris Smith’s Untimely Demise
Chris Smith’s cause of death is still a mystery at this time. But in a sad vehicle accident in 2019, he tragically lost Petara Cordero, his then-girlfriend, and the mother of his children.
They were travelling at high speeds through the I-90 when the terrible tragedy occurred at around two in the morning on September 11.
Chris Smith’s Career
Smith received a three-year contract to play for the Cleveland Browns following his time with the Cincinnati Bengals. In 2018, he made 21 tackles, one sack, and one forced fumble. He was only active for two seasons before being released.
He also participated in games with the Houston Texans in 2021 and the Las Vegas Raiders in 2020. Smith recorded eight tackles and 1.5 sacks for the Texans in four games.
Smith played for the Baltimore Ravens and the Carolina Panthers, but neither team kept him on the active roster. He has 80 tackles, 11 sacks, and three forced fumbles at the end of his eight-season NFL career.
He brought his football career back to life this year by joining the Seattle Sea Dragons. For the XFL team, Smith has made five tackles in four games.
On his Instagram page, he is also listed as an ambassador for the Nova Men apparel brand and co-owner of the Charlotte, North Carolina eatery Cloud Southend.
