In 2020, the famous boxer was diagnosed with dementia, and he died peacefully while he slept. The Ken Buchanan Foundation said Saturday afternoon that the news was true.
Ken Buchanan had one of the most famous careers in the history of Scottish boxing. In 1971, he beat Ruben Navarro in Los Angeles and won the WBC Crown. This made him the first undisputed world champion from Scotland. He retired with a record of 61-9, which stood for 50 years until Josh Taylor became the undisputed champion of the super-lightweight division.
He won his first 33 professional fights and ended his career with a record of 61 wins and 9 losses with 27 victories coming by knockout and was awarded an MBE in in 1972 and was inducted into both the International Boxing Hall of Fame and the Scottish Sport Hall of Fame. His net worth stood at $1 million.

Ken Buchanan was born in 1945 in Edinburgh, and he began boxing in the late 1960s. He won his first 33 fights and fought 69 times in total. He fought boxers like Langton Tinago, George Feeney, and Charlie Nash, all of whom were well-known. In 1970, he beat Ismael Laguna in a well-known fight in Puerto Rico to win the WBA lightweight title. The next year, he beat Ruben Navarro and won the WBC title.

But Buchanan’s time as world champion didn’t last long. He lost the WBC title because he didn’t fight to keep it against Pedro Carrasco. He lost the WBA belt when he lost to Roberto Duran for the second time in a controversial way.

Even with these setbacks, Buchanan did a lot of great things. He got an MBE in 1971, and many people thought he was one of the best boxers of his time. In 2022, a statue of him was put up in his home city of Edinburgh.

When fans and other boxers heard that Buchanan had died, they were quick to pay him tribute. Eddie Hearn, a boxing promoter, tweeted, “Sad to hear the news about Ken Buchanan – one of Scotland’s greatest fighters and a true legend of the sport.” Nicola Sturgeon, the First Minister of Scotland, also paid tribute to Buchanan, calling him a “true great of Scottish sport.”
Family of Ken Buchanan asks for privacy as they mourn boxing legend’s passing
Buchanan’s wife, Carol, and his three children, Mark, Raymond Fraser, and Karen, will carry on after him. During this hard time, the family has asked for privacy. The Ken Buchanan Foundation said in their announcement of his death, “Further announcements will come, and please give the family some time to process this sad news.”
