Wiggins is a former No.1 overall pick who had a tough start in the NBA, during his first few years.
However, the Canadian has now become an integral part of the Golden State machine during last year’s NBA Finals. His resurgence has showed why he was always so highly rated.
Despite this, he has been missing for the Warriors across several weeks now and fans are wondering what is the reason behind it.
Reason behind Andrew Wiggins not playing
Andrew Wiggins has so far not played in any games with the Golden State Warriors since February 13 2023. According to various sources, the reason behind Wiggins currently not playing is due to a ‘family matter’.
However, the details around the matter have been under incredibly close wraps out of respect for Wiggins and his family. A senior NBA reporter stated back on 3 March that:
With Wiggins missing his sixth straight game Thursday night, it’s clear that he’s dealing with something serious.”
Meanwhile, during an interview Wednesday on 95.7 The Game, general manager Bob Myers only shared how the team anticipates to have Wiggins back this season.
When interviewers asked Myers if Wiggins would be out for the remainder of the regular season, Myers said:
I don’t think that’s what anybody is planning for. But we’ll leave that in its own place. That’s not the expectation. I think what you’re asking is – could he remain out for a long, long time? I don’t think that’s happening. I’m going to leave that alone. Hopefully when he gets back, whatever words he would like to say on it, which I don’t think will be much since it’s his private life, he will do.”
Wiggins has so far played in 37 games this season with his last game coming against the Wizards. Throughout this season, Wiggins has averaged 17.1 points and 5.0 rebounds per game. He has also averaged a 39.6 percent shooting from three, which is a career best.
Steve Kerr’s latest update
When asked about when Wiggins would return, head coach Steve Kerr simply stated that the “hope” is that Andrew Wiggins will return this season. However, he added that it isn’t a sure thing.
Andrew Wiggins’ family
Andrew Wiggins’ family includes his parents Mitchell Wiggins and Marita Payne-Wiggins and his five siblings. Andrew Wiggins’ father Mitchell was a former NBA player.
The Golden State star has two older brothers, Nicholas and Mitchell Jr. who were both college basketball players. Mitchell Jr. played for Southeastern University while Nicholas Wiggins played for the Idaho Stampede (Salt Lake City Stars) in the NBA G League.
The Harlem Globetrotters drafted both the brothers in 2014. Besides his brothers, Wiggins has three sisters named Stephanie, Angelica, and Taya.
