Here is all you need to know about Bomman and Bellie, the duo who inspired the Oscar-winning short documentary The Elephant Whisperers
One of this year’s winners was the Netflix documentary The Elephant Whisperers by Kartiki Gonsalves and Guneet Monga, which took home the Oscar for Best Documentary Short Film at the 95th Academy Awards.
Who are Bomman and Bellie the couple who inspired the Elephant Whisperers and their true story
The movie is based on the lives of Bomman and Bellie, a couple who took in and raised two young orphaned elephants named Raghu and Ammu.
Gonsalves started the project in 2017 and finished it in 2022. Then it was eventually released in December 2022.
We might not have learned such important information about the natural world and how we can interact with it more humanely without Bomman and Bellie.
The couple takes care of abandoned elephant babies in Tamil Nadu’s Mudumalai Tiger Reserve. They belong to the local Kattunayakan tribe.
Bomman is a mahout (an individual who takes care of elephants) who works at Theppakadu Elephant Camp, the first elephant camp in Asia. After meeting while travelling to take care of elephants, Bellie and Bomman got married.
The two were given a young injured elephant to care for in 2017. They named it Raghu. When the three-person family came upon Ammu, the pair had already adopted and was raising another baby elephant. They finally became close as a group of four.
Nevertheless, Raghu was eventually taken in by another mahout, so Bomman and Bellie had to bid him farewell. The separation caused great sadness for the rest of the family.
The couple’s love for Raghu and Ammu is heartwarming, to put it mildly. The primary reason Kartiki Gonsalves wanted to document their voyage and the exceptional care they gave the elephant calves was to emphasise the crucial part that indigenous people play in preserving the environment and wildlife.
Which, incidentally, she has clearly succeeded in doing. Bellie and Bomman’s love for Ammu and Raghav is endearing, and we are thrilled with the positive reviews the film has received, with all those love and acceptance at the Oscars.
