David Coote is a professional football match official and the son of former Nottinghamshire cricketer, David Coote Sr. As such, he was initially tipped to follow in his dadโ€™s footsteps into cricket. However, Coote chose football over cricket and started out refereeing amateur matches at the young age of 16.

David Coote started out refereeing amateur and semiprofessional matches, in his native Nottinghamshire when he was as young as 16-years-old. Coote always had the strong intention of becoming a match official from a very young age.

He started out as a professional inn 2007 and continued a steady rise through the EFL pyramid. Coote eventually become a regular EFL Championship referee from 2012 onwards. The Nottinghamshire local made his Premier League debut back in November 2018. The match was between Newcastle and West Bromwich Albion, where the Magpies lost 1-0 away.

Following his Premier League debut, he continued to rotate between the two top tiers. Coote was officially promoted as a Premier League referee ahead of the start of the 2020/21 season. He already had over 82 Premier League matches to his name by then.

David Coote Wembley referee record

The upcoming game between Manchester United ad Newcastle is not Cooteโ€™s first game incharge at the Wembley nor his biggest Wembley appearance. he has previously refereed several EFL finals at the famous stadium.

His first outing at the Wembley came during the 2013/14 EFL League Two playoff final. In that match, Rotherham United managed to beat Leyton Orient on penalties. He then went on to take charge of the 2016/17 League One playoff final.

Back in January, Coote booked seven players in Fulham’s 2-1 win over Chelsea inclduing red card to Joao Felix. Just last weekend, he dished out nine yellow cards in the Blues’ 1-0 defeat to Southampton.
