The medical car driver at Monza has provided clarification on why he didn’t rush to the Lewis Hamilton-Max Verstappen crash site

Ever since Lewis Hamilton had decided he wanted to bring his old trick out of slyly nicking the rear of his opponents’ cars at Silverstone, the brawl between Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton has taken on new meaning.

No longer limited to just a scuffle for the championship this season, the bust-up between the two has become personal now. Verstappen was livid after Hamilton ended his race at the British GP with the Red Bull man talking about how Hamilton’s celebrations were unsportsmanlike in nature.

Come the Italian Grand Prix and things once again flared up between the two. It was Verstappen this time around as he ended up bundling into Hamilton’s Mercedes in the 25th place at Monza.

His rear right tyre went onto hit Hamilton on the helmet as the Red Bull ended over the Mercedes with Hamilton only managing to escape unscathed owing to the halo. Medical car driver, Van der Merwe has now gone onto explain why he wasn’t ask to attend to Hamilton on Twitter with him talking about how Hamilton hadn’t asked for help on the team radio and was seen trying to reverse his car.

“Nothing to suggest our presence was necessary – if Lewis’ radio comms or behaviour on video feed would have hinted at injury, we’d have gone. He was clearly trying to drive the car, and Max’s car was not blocking his egress from the cockpit,” Merwe wrote.
