During a play between Winkel Sport B and Westrozebeke on February 11 at Sportpark Terschueren in the West Flanders Province, a terrible catastrophe took place. In West Brabant, the second division of Belgium, Espeel was playing Westrozebeke.
15 minutes into the second half of the game, Westrozebeke was given a penalty, and Espeel, a goalkeeper with Winkel Sport B in West Brabant’s second provincial division of Belgium, stopped the goal. However, a short while later, according to onlookers, he collapsed on the field and immediately fell to the ground.
Emergency responders kept rushing to Mr Espeel’s assistance and made every effort to save him. Later, he was taken to a nearby hospital where, despite the best efforts of medical professionals to revive him with a defibrillator, he was later pronounced dead.
What could be the reason for the death?
As word of his untimely passing spread online, several social media users circulated unproven conspiracy theories that raised concerns about the possibility that the COVID-19 vaccine might be to blame for sudden deaths in children. Arne Espeel’s death, according to Robby Starbuck, was “not normal,” and he urged major sports leagues to look into untimely deaths of young athletes. His vaccination status is yet unknown.
In Sint-Eloois-Winkel, where his team plays in a village in West Flanders, more than 1,000 people, including Espeel’s family, reportedly walked in silence to honour Espeel. In an official statement, Winkel Sport B expressed the club’s condolences for the unexpected loss and EWinkle manager Patrick Rotsaert also recalled his memories with the player as well.
