Where is Oscar Pistorius now?

For the murder of his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp, Pistorius is currently serving a 13 year, five month prison term.

On Valentine’s Day in 2013, Pistorius shot and killed the 29-year-old model in their Pretoria home.

Pistorius admitted at a hearing that he had shot Steenkamp through a barred toilet door because he had thought she was an intruder.

After a highly public trial, Pistorius was judged responsible for the death and given a five-year prison term. South Africans were outraged by the lenient sentence, and after an appeal in 2017, the former athlete was found guilty of murder and his sentence was increased to 13 years and five months.

When is his prison release date?

The former paralympian from South Africa went to court in September 2022 to attempt and convince the judge that he is eligible for release.

Pistorius claims that he is eligible because he has already served more than half of his 13 years and five months in prison for the 2013 murder of Steenkemp.

His sentence was increased from six years in 2015 to 13 years in 2017, so it is unclear when his punishment actually started. Prior to being qualified for release under South African law, he had to meet with the victim’s family and have served half of his sentence.

He will be formally eligible for parole next month, according to SA People, and his lawyer says he can request a parole hearing as soon as he is.

Even if the former athlete is qualified, he must still appear in court for a parole hearing when officials will decide whether or not to grant him an early release.
