As investigators continue to piece together what happened before the tragic event, they are beginning to learn more about the suspect, Anthony McRae.
Who is MSU shooter Anthony McRae, his age, criminal record history and crimes list
During a press conference on Tuesday, Anthony McRae was named as the accused shooter by Chris Rozman, who is the temporary deputy chief of the campus police department. McRae, who was 43 years old, killed himself with a gun after an argument with the police.
Rozman says that McRae has a long list of crimes, which sheds light on why the shooting might have happened. According to court records, McRae was charged in 2019 with carrying a loaded gun, which is a felony in Michigan. But in the end, he took a deal for a less serious charge and admitted to having a gun that was loaded.

The Offender Tracking Information System of the Michigan Department of Corrections shows that Anthony McRae was given a maximum sentence of one year and six months of probation for the crime. But on May 14, 2021, he was no longer being watched, which meant he had done well on his probation.
When the police asked McRae why he was carrying a gun in 2019, he said it was because he was walking to the store to buy cigarettes and was afraid for his safety. It’s not clear if he had ever been in trouble with the law before.
Getting booked for traffic abuse
Anthony McRae had also gotten many traffic tickets in Lansing, where he lived with his father, Michael McRae. This was in addition to the crime he committed with a gun. One of these tickets was for driving with a licence that had been taken away.
Officers set up a perimeter around Michael McRae’s house in Lansing after he asked them to check on his son’s well-being last week, according to property records. Since then, McRae’s Facebook account has been taken down.
