Aston Martin have been quick to shut down the rumours of having approached Fernando Alonso to replace Sebastian Vettel next season

Ever since news of George Russell being on the cusp of a move to Mercedes for next season has sprung up, its sparked a nice little merry-go-round in the land of Formula 1.

While there’s been no confirmation as of now of the move, Toto Wolff did coyly hint over Russell linking up Hamilton in an interview ahead of the Dutch Grand Prix 2021. And with the Williams man set to take over from Valtteri Bottas come the ensuing campaign, Williams are now said to be scouring for a replacement.

Aston Martin Rubbish Links To Fernando Alonso

Concurrently, Valtteri Bottas is being linked to Alfa Romeo as a replacement for Kimi Raikkonen who has revealed he will be retiring come the end of the 2021 season. However, in the midst of these reports, Auto Motor und Sport went onto claim that Aston Martin had opened talks with Alpine’s Fernando Alonso to replace Sebastian Vettel who is yet to extend his contract with the team.

The outlet went as far as to claim that Alonso had rejected the offer team owner Lawrence Stroll had made to him. However, Aston Martin who are far from pleased with the rumours have released a statement shutting down any such reports.

“Lawrence Stroll did not offer a drive to Fernando Alonso, as has been reported in some media,” said an Aston Martin spokesperson.

“Lawrence had lunch with [Alonso’s manager] Flavio Briatore in Sardinia during the summer break. Lawrence and Flavio are friends,” he continued.

Vettel had only a couple of days earlier spoken about how he was likely to stay at Aston Martin going into 2022 as well.
