The opening ceremony of the Tokyo Paralympic Games took place at the Tokyo Olympics village on August 24th, 2021. Tek Chand who is an Indian Javelin thrower in the disabled category was India’s flag-bearer after Thangavelu Mariyappan came in close contact with a COVID-19 positive case.
The latest edition of the Paralympic Games has begun in Tokyo on the 24th of August 2020. 5th September is scheduled as the date for the closing ceremony of the Games. A total of 539 events are to take place at the Paralympic Games and all these events are medal events.

India has sent 54 Paralympians to the Tokyo Paralympics. The Indian athletes will be battling to conquer medals in 22 sports. Earlier Mariyappan who is a high jumper from India was finalized as the flag-bearer for the Opening Ceremony.
Unfortunately, Mariyappan couldn’t make it to the Opening Ceremony because he was in quarantine. During the 2016 Rio Olympics as well, Mariyappan was given the honor to bear the flag. Now when Mariyappan’s name was called off, Tek Chand replaced him.

Tek Chand is an Indian Paralympian in the F54 category. People with F54 disability are the ones who have got good control and coordination in their upper body. But lack the same in their lower body. Tek Chand performs in Paralympics while sitting only.
Tek was born without any kind of disability but in 2005, he met with an accident that made him disabled. Despite so many obstacles in his life, he has always managed to focus on his game.

Tek hails from Haryana’s Rewari district. His father is a farmer as farming is their ancestral profession.

During 2019 at the World Para Championships, Tek Chand bagged the 6th position in javelin throw. He started practicing Javelin throw in the year 2016. At the Para Asian Games in 2018, Tek bagged a bronze medal and silver at the 2018 World Para Athletics Grand Prix in shotput.
Tek Chand practices near about 200 throws in a single day. His consistency and hard work have made him reach great success today.
