The mayor of New Orleans is now being charged with having an “ongoing adulterous affair” with the former chief of her police detail, who was later suspended following an investigation into pay violations.

The 50-year-old New Orleans police officer Jeffrey Vappie’s wife made the most recent charges in an amendment to her divorce petition, alleging that her estranged husband had sexual contact with a lady only identified as “Mrs. L.C.”
LaToya Cantrell, the city’s 50-year-old mayor, has been identified as “Mrs. L.C.” by several local media publications. In 2018, Cantrell became the city of New Orleans’ first female mayor. Amid multiple financial scandals, she is currently fighting a recall campaign. Danielle, Vappie’s wife, claims that her husband has been having an affair with the mayor since May 2021, when he started working on Cantrell’s detail.
The bigger picture
This month, Danielle updated her divorce application. According to a Fox New Orleans investigation from the previous year, Vappie and Cantrell spent more than five hours of their working day together in a city-owned residence in the Upper Pontalba neighbourhood.
In response to those reports, Vappie discovered himself the subject of an inquiry into the hours he was allegedly clocking in. He was also charged with shelling out $916 for a single night’s stay in a hotel room in Washington, DC, in January 2022.
He’s also thought to have gone with her to a dinner party in Los Angeles where Brad Pitt was one of the attendees. He went to Scotland with her as well. According to a calculation by Fox 8 News, Cantrell’s choice to include security on outings has cost the taxpayers more than $50,000 since October 2021.
Additionally, Vappie was in her apartment for 112 hours over 27 days and was even photographed watering her plants. According to the station, Vappie told his wife about the affair. Since November 2022, the couple has been living separately. Vappie is no longer a member of the mayor’s detail as of the time of writing.
According to his LinkedIn page, Vappie has worked as a detective with the City of New Orleans PD since 1997. He graduated with a Master’s in Government Administration in 2020. Cantrell, who is already married, has refuted the charges.
