Birsa Munda’s early life
Birsa was born and raised up in the tribal areas of Bihar and Jharkhand, and Munda spent most of his childhood traveling from one village to another with his parents. It is stated, ‘because of him the tribal community survived for a very long time, the state of Jharkhand was created on his birth anniversary in early 2000 to honor him.’
Birsa Munda education
Birsa hailed from the Munda community in the Chotanagpur plateau region and he received his education from the Salga under the guidance of a teacher, Jaipal Nag. Later, Birsa converted himself into a Christian to join the German Mission School but soon dropped out after finding out that Britishers were aiming to convert tribals to Christianity through education.
After dropping out of school, Birsa Munda created a faith named as ‘Birsait’. Members of the Munda community soon began joining faith which in turn became a challenge for the British conversation activities.
History of the tribal communities
Earlier, the tribal communities faced a lot of exploitation and oppression by zamindars, jagirdars, moneylenders, etc. Numerous attacks were carried out by the followers of Birsa Munda on the British in different places led the British rulers to declare a cash reward of Rs 500 on Birsa Munda.
Birsa Mundas vs British soldiers
Between the years 1897-1900, the wars between Mundas and British soldiers began. In August of 1897, Birsa and 400 of his soldiers were armed with arrowheads and attacking the Khunti police station. In late 1898, the Mundas clashed with the British forces on banks of river Tanga, in which the British army was defeated first, and then later on several tribal leaders of that area were arrested.
