Season 2 of Shark Tank India features a pitch from the creators of Dorje Teas, whose products boast “the original taste of Darjeeling.” Dorje Tea’s headquarters can be found in Darjeeling’s historic Selim Hill Tea Garden.

An estimated 10,000 tea gardens can be found throughout India. Yet just 87 of these tea gardens are located in and around Darjeeling, where they produce the high-quality teas known as “The Champagne of Teas.” Despite the fact that these teas are a source of national pride for India, Dorje Tea recognised that most Indians simply cannot afford them or have no way to obtain them.

Where are the Dorje tea plantations?

Selim Hill Tea Garden is one of Darjeeling’s 87 tea gardens, and it’s perched at an altitude of 4,000 feet. Henry Selim, an Englishman, started planting it in 1871, and it now extends all the way to the city limits of Kurseong.

Half of the garden’s 1,000 acres are taken up by the Selim Hill Forest, which is home to leopards, barking deers, elephants, and a variety of spiders and snakes as well as hundreds of bird species, including the famous Indian hornbill.

For Rs 2,100, a customer can have a kilo of tea, with 250-gram packets of each flush throughout the year. The word “Darjeeling,” from which the brand name “Dorje” comes, has multiple meanings.

While the 87 tea estates in Darjeeling’s hills produce about a million kilos of tea each year, many of them are struggling due to the high cost of labour and the low price of tea.
