Why Maguire became topic-of-hour in Ghana’s Parliament?
In his sarcastic speech, Adongo highlighted how Maguire went from being labelled as the best defender in world to one of the worst performers of his team. Adongo also asserted that Bawumia’s failure in his role is similar to Maguire’s failure as defender. He added:
Harry Maguire, he’s a defender. He was tackling everybody and throwing his body everywhere. And he was seen as the best defender in the world. Manchester United went and bought him”
Due to his Manchester United performances, Harry Maguire has received peculiar jeers in the Ghanaian Parliament. During a verbal attack on vice-president Mahamudu Bawumia, Ghanaian politician Isaac Adongo viciously tore into Maguire’s Red Devils career, which incited hysterical laughter. In his stirring address on football, the Ghanaian compared Manchester United’s Harry Maguire to Ghana’s vice president Mahamudu Bawumia. He asserted that, like Maguire for the Red Devils, Bawumia enjoyed scoring own goals.

Isaac Adongo is one of the parliamentarian affiliated with the opposition party of Ghana, known as National Democratic Congress. On Wednesday, the chamber started debating the 2023 budget, and NDC asserted that the New Patriotic Party, which is now in power, had mismanaged the economy. In his speech, Adongo brought up Maguire as a way to criticize Mahamudu Bawumia of the NPP, who is vice president and was previously the deputy governor of the Bank of Ghana. Adongo also labelled Bawumia as “economic Maguire”, as reference to his failure in assigned responsibilities.
At the parliament, Adongo addressed to speaker and mentioned that:
Mr Speaker, you remember in this country we also have an economic Maguire. This economic Maguire, we’re clapping saying this man is the best in managing foreign terms,”
