Nihal began playing competitive chess at the age of 7 in the middle of 2011. In February 2016, Nihal Sarin played one of the first International Open outside India at the prestigious Cappelle la Grande Open and registered his International Master norm. In the process, Nihal defeated a grandmaster for the first time in his career and since then played several games.

Nihal who has a height of 5 feet 3 inches is considered one of the youngest chess talents from India. He was born to Sarin Abdulsalam who is a dermatologist while his mother Shijin Ammanam Veetil Ummar is a psychiatrist. He spent his first few years in the city of Kottayam. Nihal was a student at the Excelsior English School. Nihal and his family shifted to Thrissur where Nihal joined Devamatha CMI Public School in 2011.

Nihal Sarin could recognize the capitals and the flags of 190 countries since the age of 3. At the same age, Nihal knew and recite from memory the scientific names of insects and plants. By the time Nihal was in upper kindergarten he spoke fluent English and by the age of 6 years he knew all the multiplication tables till the 16.
Nihal started chess at the age of six, in order to not make him feel bored during school vacations. His father made him introduce to a chess set and his grandfather A. A. Ummar taught him the rules in Kottayam. He was formally taught chess by Mathew P. Joseph Pottoore, the school’s chess coach who instructed him once a week in the starting days.

Nihal achieved the Kerala state championship of the Under-07 category in 2011, the Under-09 title twice, and the Under-11 title twice and the Under-15 title once being a sub-junior. He became runner-up in the State Senior championship in 2015, Irinjalakuda at the age of 10. Nihal was twice the State Under-19 Runner-up at the age of 8 and 10 years.
Nihal achieved a gold medal at the World Blitz Championship of the Under-10 category in Al-Ain held in 2013. In this same category, Nihal was the Rapid and Blitz gold medalist at Asian Youth Championship held in Tashkent in 2014 and also contested in several other youth championships in 2015, 2016 and 2017 and he won the 2020 championship.
