Nodirbek Abdusattorov faced Hjorvar Steinn Gretarsson twice on Wednesday after defeating Wesley So and Ian Nepomniachtchi, on the first day of competition. After winning both of his matches against Gretarsson, 18-year-old Abdusattorov sealed his place in the semifinal with two rounds to spare. Meanwhile, Nepomniachtchi defeated reigning champion Wesley So in one round and drew in another round to sit second with 5 points after 4 rounds. So will need to win both of his matches on Thursday to move ahead of Nepo and qualify for semi-final.

In group B, Vladimir Fedoseev has remote chance of making it to the semifinals after staying unbeaten across two games against Hikaru Nakamura. Despite having a two-point deficit to co-leaders Hikaru Nakamura and Magnus Carlsen in this variation, the Russian has shown that he is capable of competing head-to-head with them. On Wednesday, Carlsen defeated the underdog Matthias Bluebaum to amass 4/4 match points, which propelled him to first-place alongside Nakamura.
