Prediction
Stefanos Tsitsipas, the top seed at the 2022 Stockholm Open, will play World No. 33 Maxime Cressy in the second round after getting a bye in the opening round.
Tsitsipas started the year strong at the Grand Slams, but over time, his play slipped. Before losing, he reached the Australian Open semifinals, the fourth round of the French Open, the Wimbledon third round, and the first round of the US Open. He is having yet another successful season and remains one of the tour’s most dependable players outside of the Majors.
On the other side, Ilya Ivashka and Maxime Cressy were matched up in this particular first round. With just one service break, the Belarusian easily won the first set. Due to the two players’ solid serve defence in the second set, neither was able to get a break. Cressy improved in the ensuing tie-break to win the set and set up a third set that would decide the match. Following Cressy’s serve break in the ninth game to go up 5-4, it appeared like the decisive set would also result in a tie-break. The American then onto the court to serve for the match, which he eventually won on his fourth match point after his opponents were defeated 4-6, 7-6 (5), 6-4.
After defeating Andrey Rublev and Hubert Hurkacz on the way to the Astana finals, Tsitsipas lost to Novak Djokovic to cap off an amazing season. This season, the Greek has amassed a total of 53 victories and a 28-12 record on hard courts. Cressy has been playing around.500 overall and on the hard courts this year, and he hasn’t defeated anyone of Tsitsipas’ calibre on the surface. Cressy can be a difficult opponent because he is a much better player than he was when they last faced off at the US Open in 2020. Don’t be astonished if he wins a set even though he might not have enough to prevail.
