All set for the Ballon d’Or 2022

The unveiling of the finalists for each of the four major categories on August 12 marked the beginning of the Ballon d’Or 2022 preparations.

Major modifications have been made to the Ballon d’Or after Messi’s contentious triumph over Lewandowski in 2021. France Football made the announcement that player performances from the season, rather than the entire year, would be considered in March 2022. The top 100 nations in the FIFA rankings for men and the top 50 nations in the rankings for women will now be the only countries eligible for media voting.

Additionally, voting criteria were revised to no longer take into account a candidate’s whole career achievement and to instead emphasise three key elements:

  • Individual season-long performance (no longer by calendar year)
  • Team accomplishments from the previous season
  • taking into account player conduct and fair play throughout the season
