Given the go ahead by Real Madrid to feature for Spain in the Tokyo Olympics, the ongoing games looked to be a defining moment for Dani Ceballos. With his career in a limbo across the last couple of years and Real Madrid eager to offload him, the Olympics looked the ideal stage for Ceballos to impress on the big stage.

Taher Mohamed ran straight into Ceballos in a bid to win the ball in the 43rd minute. It was a shocking bit of play, one which saw him trod on Ceballosโ€™ ankle to leave the Real Madrid player in anguish.

The absurd challenge ended up only getting a yellow card from the referee. Ceballos wasnโ€™t the only player forced to leave the tie owing to injury with Barcelonaโ€™s Oscar Mingueza departing the match earlier ensuing a torrid tackle by Ahmed Fotouh. Despite referring to the VAR monitor, the referee decided that a yellow card was enough for the tackle which ended Oscarโ€™s tie.

The Spanish FA have meanwhile provided an update on Ceballosโ€™ injury with the association saying that the player had sustained an ankle injury. While any impending outcome will only come after further medical tests, Ceballos looks set to miss his countryโ€™s match against Australia.

Egyptโ€™s malicious tactics meanwhile managed to work in their favour as the side ended up with a 0-0 draw on the day. Hard tackling and resolute defending was enough to parry away Spainโ€™s attacking endeavours in the two countryโ€™s Tokyo Olympics 2021 opening matchup on Thursday.
