2022 US Chess Championship Day 5 Results, Score, Winners, Standings, & Round 6 Schedule
In Sunday’s Round 5 match, Awonder Liang stunned pre-tournament favorite Levon Aronian to bag an unprecedented win and sit second in open division standings of the 2022 US Chess Championships. Following his latest draw against reigning champion Wesley So, Fabiano Caruana saw his lead reduce to 0.5 point with Samuel Sevian and Liang on chase. After culmination of Round 5, GM Moradiabadi is sitting at bottom of standings with only 1.5 points in 5 matches. Meanwhile, Levon Aronian is sitting at 12th position after a string of disappointing performances that resulted in only 2 points from possible 5 points.
In the women’s championship, four leaders have surged above the pack: Yu is in the lead with a score of 4/5, followed closely by Krush, Abrahamyan, and Alice Lee with a score of 3.5/5. Both previous champions prevailed in their games on Sunday, and they may enjoy the day off to get ready for the round six encounter with the white pieces. Yu carried on her rogue streak through the board, outplaying WGM Sabina-Francesca Foisor in a crisp endgame. The round’s most shocking event was FM Alice Lee missing a win versus WFM Sophie Morris-Suzuki, which would have produced a number of intriguing lines. The error cost Lee a position next to Krush going into round six.
In the sixth round of the 2022 US Chess Championship, reigning champion Wesley So will play against Leinier Dominguez. Leader Fabiano Caruana will face off against last-place Moradiabadi in a contest that will be distinct in nature. In an endeavor to win his third game of tournament, Christopher Yoo will compete against the second-place opponent, the hot-handed Liang on Tuesday.
