Prediction

The first-ever ATP Astana Open has certainly been a success after two thrilling semifinal matches and a week of generally high-quality tennis, and the excitement should continue in Sunday’s final match.

The semifinal matchup with Daniil Medvedev marked Djokovic’s first set loss since Wimbledon. The Serb had won 17 straight sets prior to losing the opening set 6-4, but he bounced back to win the second set 8-6 in a tiebreak thanks to a solid performance. Then, Medvedev was had to retire due to an injury, which surprised both Djokovic and the spectators as well. With convincing victories over Karen Khachanov, Cristian Garin, and Botic van de Zandschulp, Djokovic has already qualified for the semifinals.

Following his withdrawal from the Australian Open and US Open and the lack of points awarded at Wimbledon, Djokovic’s ranking dropped to #7. If he wants to make a run for the top spot again, he will need to climb back up the rankings, though for the time being, it seems as though his main concern is getting into Turin.

In his semifinal encounter against another Russian, Andrey Rublev, Tsitsipas also had to rally from a set down to win. After victories over Mikhail Kukushkin, Luca Nardi, and Hubert Hurkacz, it was also the Greek’s first set loss this week. The 24-year-season old’s has been unusual, with just two victories, in Mallorca and Monte Carlo, but a lot of deep runs. Along with winning titles, Tsitsipas also advanced the finals in the Australian Open, Rotterdam, Rome, and Cincinnati.

It is obvious how badly Djokovic wants this title based on the grit he shown against Medvedev.
He has maintained high level all week, and on this faster surface, he should be able to expose Tsitsipas’ backhand.
