Brendan Taylor who followed up on his shot ended up connecting his bat with the wickets to be given out hit wicket in the ODI

Over the years, if there’s something supporters of every country have universally agreed upon, it’s the appalling standard of umpiring in cricket.

ICC has refused to get its house in order, employing the same set of half cooked names who refuse to make any kind of effort to up the ante. We’ve been witnessed to some of the most shocking decisions over the last era, ones which look set to continue owing to the ICC’s lack of acceptance and refusal to change.

Such a howler of a decision was on show in the ODI between Zimbabwe and Bangladesh. Brendan Taylor who was batting on 46 ended up missing out on a well deserved delivery owing to the grey areas of the ICC’s laws.

Missing a delivery from Shoriful Islam in the 25th over of the match, Taylor went onto shadow practice his shot ensuing the miss. Despite the ball nestling in the gloves of the wicket-keeper, Taylor not attempting to go for a run and the bowler not in his stride, the umpire gave Taylor out as he connected his bat with his stumps.

Taylor’s shadow practice shot ended up following through with the wickets as the bail fell over and he was given out hit wicket. Despite it being a dead ball, Taylor was asked to leave the field to divide the world of cricket.

Why Was Brendan Taylor Given Out?

Many brought up the rules which clearly showed Taylor wasn’t in the wrong while many cited Oshane Thomas at the 2019 Cricket World Cup where the West Indian as given not out for an akin incident.

Law 35.1.1 of the game which judges such dismissals has since been poured perusal of in-depth with everything alluding towards Taylor having finished his shot and the ball being dead to leave viewers flummoxed at the umpiring decision.

35.1.1.1 – in the course of any action taken by him/her in preparing to receive or in receiving a delivery.

35.1.1.2 – in setting off for the first run immediately after playing or playing at the ball.

35.1.1.3 – if no attempt is made to play the ball, in setting off for the first run, providing that in the opinion of the umpire this is immediately after the striker has had the opportunity of playing the ball.
