Mary Roy, a well-known educator and social worker who fought for Syrian Christian women’s equal rights in their ancestral property through the legal system, passed away on Thursday as a result of age-related illnesses, according to family sources.

She is Mary Roy, the mother of Arundhati Roy and Lalit Roy. She is also the Ammu of Arundhati Roy’s The God of Small Things—the mother of Rahel and Estha. At the time of her death, she was 89 years old. Since then, she has become the talk of the town with many people paying her their sincere condolences. Roy’s death was mourned by Kerala’s chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan and the leader of the opposition in the Kerala Assembly, V D Satheesan.
According to Vijayan, Mary made important contributions to education and activities that promoted the welfare of women in society. She also cemented her position in history by successfully advocating for women’s property rights in court.

Who Was Mary Roy?
Mary Roy was an Indian educator and women’s rights advocate best known for her Supreme Court victory in 1986 in a case challenging the Syrian Malabar Nasrani community of Kerala’s gender-biased inheritance law. Due to her recent death, she has lately been in the headlines.
In the Kingdom of Travancore’s Aymanam, she was born in 1933. Her family belongs to the Syrian Christian community. Her mother’s name was Susy Isaac, and her father was P. V. Isaac, an Imperial Entomologist in Pusa. She was the youngest among four siblings.
Mary Roy was raised in Delhi, where she finished high school before moving to Madras (the modern-day Chennai) to finish her degree. Later, she relocated to Calcutta where she worked as an office secretary.
In Shillong, she married Bengali Hindu tea plantation manager Rajeeb Roy. According to reports, the marriage was abusive and resulted in a divorce. She had two daughters and Arundhati Roy, the Booker Prize-winning author, was one of them.
Roy was the founder and director of Pallikoodam (formerly Corpus Christi High School), which is located in Kalathilpady, a neighbourhood of Kottayam city in the Indian state of Kerala.

At the age of 89, Roy passed away from age-related illnesses at her residence in the Kottayam neighbourhood of Chennai.
